6 tips to prevent heartburn and stay healthy!
Eating healthy definitely has it’s perks and drawbacks. I have found that I will start eating better and be on my way to a healthier diet only to be set back by my finicky digestive system. Fighting through the burn isn’t always the best option. There are definitely ways to combat heartburn and keep your body in fighting shape.
Avoid eating spicy, acidic or fatty foods that are known to trigger heartburn. My husband just learned this the hard way. He wasn’t feeling well and among other things, he saw the doctor about a pressure on his chest. The doctor informed him, much to his dismay, that the spicy foods he eats all the time is probably the culprit. I got a very sad text message from him that day. He has been avoiding it as best as he can and his chest has loosened up considerably. I have had to slow down on my favorite fruits. I love them but sometimes the sentiment is not returned.
Speaking of loosening up………. A number of websites and my doctor all cite loosening up any constrictive clothes that may be bothering you as an effective heartburn remedy. Heartburn is stuff backing up in your digestive system so it makes sense that you need to give it room. Next time you get in trouble for loosening you pants after Thanksgiving dinner you can tell them you are just trying to be healthy!
Keep a healthy weight and don’t smoke. I know. Easier said than done (well except the smoking part..). Sometimes a few pounds lost can make a world of difference. I know when I am working at a healthy weight I tend to move more and eat better. All things that keep your digestive system working well and help it to stay on track. As for the smoking thing, you obviously don’t breathe correctly when you smoke which can cause strain on your abdomen.
Eat three hours before bed. Your brain isn’t the only system in your body that winds down for the day. Everything in your body prepares for sleep. Including your digestive system.
Stand up straight. The age old mother’s line is true. You are doing more harm than good when you slump. Not only does it put strain on your shoulders and back you compress your digestive system. It goes right along with loosening up. You need to give your system room to work.
Reach for an over the counter remedy. Over the counter remedies like Nexium 24HR can help with frequent heartburn. They block the heartburn at the source. Your acid pumps are turned off so it blocks the acid and gives you relief from the stomach acid that causes heartburn.. You can get 24 hour relief. Since pills like Nexium 24HR are over the counter, there is no need to wait. Nexium 24HR will take up to four days to work and can be taken for 14 days, but not any longer. You will still need to work on your diet and lifestyle to prevent further issues.
These tips have helped my husband and I enormously. It’s been nice to go to bed with out either of us moaning and groaning in our sleep. Now if I could just do something about his snoring………
