About a year or so ago my Mom got a subscription for Discovery Girls Magazine for my now 11 year old daughter. She wasn’t sure at first if she was going to like it. At first glance it seemed a little too “girly” for her taste. After the second or third issue she received she was hooked.
Let me give you some info about Discovery Girls:
*The magazine was first published in 2000
*The issues of the magazine are bimonthly
*You can find the magazine at Barnes & Noble, Borders & Waldenbooks. You can also find the magazine at mass market outlets like Target (my favorite) or Walmart.
*Each issue is $4.50 or you can subscribe for a year for $19.95
Discovery Girls Magazine has featured girls from Kansas, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey recently.
This is one of my favorite aspects of Discovery Girls. They use REAL girls. Not girls that have been picked by a talent scout. Real stories, real girls, real opinions.
Discovery Girls Mission Statement:
To connect girls to one another during a sometimes difficult time so they know that they are
not alone as well as:
• To encourage you to love all that you are
• To further your independence through a belief in your own abilities
• To guide you through the most difficult of times
• To excite you with choices you never knew you had
• To give you a voiceDiscovery Girls is a national magazine aimed at girls between the ages of 8 and 13. Our mission is to inspire and encourage girls to be more confident and resilient and help them deal with those difficult situations that all girls run into growing up. We give them advice and wholesome content addressing everything from peer pressure to fashion, friendship to future careers. Most importantly, much of our content comes form the girls themselves. Their embarrassing moments, their answered questions and statistics gathered from their responses to our questions, polls and surveys are all featured in every issue. All this content helps connect them to each other and realize they’re all going through the same thing in their own unique way. We also feature real girls on the cover and in every issue. We choose 12 girls from a specific state to be our “Discovery Girls” and we then travel to that state to hold a two-day photo shoot! These girls inspire our readers, and we never put celebrities on our covers!
Review
I was sent a Discovery Girls Magazine issue (Jun/July), a Fab Girls Book (Friendship Hardship) & Survival Guide Collector’s Edition-10 years of the best advice from girls to review.
My Take:
I glanced over the materials before handing them off to my daughter. I loved what I saw. I am really impressed with the Fab Girls Books & the collector’s addition we received. It had great honest advice, really colorful and attention attracting illustrations & pictures. It has great language, right at a tweens level. I think they are worth the price and definitely would buy them if I saw them in the store.
My Daughter’s Take:
CraftyKid: I think the Survival Guide is great because it gives you fashion tips, health tips (like how to take care of your skin), cool craft ideas, quizzes & on how to deal with embarrassing moments and celebrities even shared some of their embarrassing moments. I like when embarrassing moments are shared because it makes me feel better about my own “moments”. 🙂
Discovery Girls Magazine is very cool because it helps you learn to save money & how to spend it wisely. It also gives you fashion tips (like if you are ready for a bra & what kind you should buy), it let’s you enter contests and how to make fun crafts. I also liked the advice they gave about how to have a great friendship with your friends.
I think a girls guide for friendship (Friendship Hardship) is a great way to show you how to have a great friendship with your sister, friend or whoever. The book gives lots of advice about things you can do to help your friendships. The thing I most liked about this book is it explains how to really look at your friends: are they really nice to you? or are they a backstabbing, mean friend?
Well if you want to find out all this wonderful stuff, go buy the magazine! (Or enter my Mom’s giveaway) 🙂
