U by Kotex – A Frank Discussion.
Squeamish is not the word you would use to describe me. As a mom I don’t believe in “sugar-coating” things. I believe that age appropriate conversations can be had about most topics. As a teenager I was very confused when I got my period. When it was described to me in school I envisioned a Niagara Falls type experience. When I first got it I was seriously convinced that I was bleeding internally. I remember the panic, the embarrassment, the total and utter confusion that I felt and I never want my 2 daughters to feel that way.
I have two daughters, 12 and 5. My 5 year old is aware of the fact that a period is something that only a woman gets but she has no clue what it is. If she asks me questions, I answer them age appropriately. I did the same for my older daughter.
Because of my strong feelings on the subject I was really proud to be chosen as a #KotexMom. Just recently I was made aware of by a store display a newer line of Tween products that Kotex carries. It’s called U by Kotex – Tween. Description from the website: Period preparation gets colorful patterns and tween attitude in the U by Kotex Tween combo pack. Choose pads that are smaller than our regular pads but absorb like our heavy flow pads, or liners for backup protection. Either way, you get serious protection with a fresh look. Tween pads are available separately too.
I have maintained a direct line for my daughter for any and all questions that she has. We have discussed why some girls get it earlier than others and why some get them later. I have made sure she knows where I keep “the stuff”, how to use it and how to be vigilant to what the signs are when it starts. She knows that I will be there, be discreet and available for when the time comes.
Up to a few years ago I was a brand snob when it came to period products. I always stuck to the same brand. I got a coupon one time for Kotex products and I decided to go outside my box and try them. Now Kotex is one of the brands I consistently buy. I was telling my daughter the other day how lucky she is that companies are starting to view the needs of different ages and size needs of women regarding their period products. When I started mine it was one size fits all.
I feel when you have daughters this type of conversations need to open and frank. If you show your discomfort, she will sense it. It’s something that happens to everyone as a woman and can not be avoided. It makes me beyond happy that moms are starting to loosen up and help guide their daughter’s about their period instead of allowing the school to educate them or a pamphlet. {I HATE pamphlets by the way, worse tool for a teen ever.}
Aimee Teegarden Gets Real Video by Nickelodeon’s ParentConnect and U by Kotex -Tween describes a relationship very similar to my daughter and I. Non-sugarcoating and open. It really works. Check out the video:
