I have recently noticed a shift in our culture to be green, as I am sure that a lot of you have noticed also. I for one am quite happy in this new trend. Our lives are being lengthened by current medicine and I no longer have the “let it be another generations problem” mentality. Reusable things do have a place in our lives. I truly believe that I can even go as far to say reusable products can also improve it. A lot of products we are using have an alarming amount of chemicals in them. Most “green” products go out of their way to make sure those chemicals don’t make it into their products. I have a local Trader Joe’s that I absolutely love and I have found a lot of their environmental friendly products work just as well as some of the mainstream products in the regular supermarkets & super stores.
So here’s some My Crafty Life how to go green tips:
1. Get rid of your incandescent light bulbs and replace them with compact florescent. You’ll be green & save $ ! Win win!
2. Put a recycling bin in a high traffic area in your kitchens and bathrooms where every one in your family will see it. It will remind them to recycle items instead of throwing it in the trash. Bathrooms are very important because A LOT of personal items come with A LOT of packaging.
3. Use fabric towels in the kitchen the same way you would paper towels. Purchase cheap fabric towels in bulk and have a designated area in your kitchen for clean & dirty towels. It’s a little extra laundry, but it’s easier on your budget. (You can also add these cute towels to your bathrooms & kitchens for people’s hands. If any of you would like one let me know…I know the designer!)
4. Consider using reusable/solar batteries to power your electronic devices. A solar powered battery charger may sound costly or inconvenient but when you do the math it saves you a lot of money and the new solar batteries are a far cry from the old bulky designs. It’s worth checking out. Portable solar energy is a simple way that you can reduce your reliance on fossil fuels. Cut your energy consumption charging your phone, DS, etc. using the power of the sun. Again, go green…save $. Win win.
5. Consider a herb/vegetable garden. Even if you live in an apartment you can grow fresh vegetables. Do a search on Google and you will see just how many different ways there are to grow a garden. It’s safer, you know what chemicals have been used on the produce and you can choose from a wide variety of produce to grow you may not be able to find in a grocery store.
How does your family stay green? Any tips I haven’t thought
of? Please share them in the comments. I’d love to hear
them!
