LYSOL is introducing the concept of Healthing – a new idea centered on keeping families as healthy as possible, by looking beyond just cleaning and ensuring that the proper steps are taken to stay well. I thought I knew what clean was until I had a 9 week premature infant. It brought a whole new understanding of clean into our house. Just smelling good or looking clean on the surface is not enough. When you have a preemie you can’t just buy a product and “hope” it works.
Effective products can be the difference between a healthy preemie or a hospital stay. You also have to be careful of the harshness of the scents and products. Bleach maybe effective but can also be harsh and have a very strong scent. One of the reasons I have always used Lysol is the variety of products I can choose from and they have given me the ability to change up what I use dependent on the ages of my children. Their multi-use products are my favorite. They have a multi-use cleaner that uses hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach. Less harsh and not as strong smelling. I appreciate that because I have fibromyalgia and strong scents can sometimes set off an attack.
My favorite tag line from Lysol’s website is “Healthing is knowing that kids touch everything but soap”. How true is that?
The little things that we do every day – particularly our hygiene and cleaning habits – can make an impact on our health. This is especially important on the heels of one of the worst cold and flu seasons in a decade. My family literally has been sick since October 2012. So, this season, let’s do more than Spring Cleaning. Let’s practice Spring “Healthing.”
This new season should be more about adopting a healthier overall lifestyle instead of just merely cleaning out your closet.
It’s not just about having a clean home, but a healthy home.
Healthing is the extension of LYSOL and its Mission for Health, the motivation behind the creation of their products that are centered on killing 99.9 percent of germs and providing solutions for the home that help promote good hygiene and disinfection.
The idea of Healthing goes beyond cleaning – and looks more holistically at how a healthy home helps to keep families thriving.
One important way to integrate Healthing into your home is to understand the difference between cleaning and disinfecting, as both are important components of the Healthing process. While cleaning and organizing is certainly important, killing germs on commonly touched surfaces can lower the risk of spreading bacteria and viruses between family members. I used Lysol products all through the winter and I know how well they work. I can’t imagine how sick we could have been if I wasn’t so diligent in disinfecting. My favorite part of Healthing is that it doesn’t take any more effort than cleaning, just a little more thought about the products you buy.
Here are some tips to start Healthing with your family (and ones my family uses):
Know the difference between cleaning and disinfecting! Both are important parts of the Healthing process and LYSOL has products that can help with all related tasks. While cleaning and organizing is certainly important, killing germs on commonly touched surfaces can lower the risk of spreading bacteria and viruses between members of the family. I wiped down the toilet, the faucets, the counters and door handles multiple times a day.
Start with small stuff. Wipe down easy to reach surfaces and then move onto the little nooks and crannies. Remember to dust around wall art, photographs, towel bars, door frames and woodwork. Use a disinfectant product, like LYSOL® Disinfecting Wipes, to help ensure you’re killing germs as you clean, and think beyond the usual places. Be sure to clean even the smallest surfaces, such as light switches. Light switches are a BIG one. Don’t forget telephones. The amount of times germs can linger on telephones is gross.
Remember to practice proper hand washing as well after you clean, either with soap and water for 20 seconds or a hand sanitizer. Hand washing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I have my 6 year old sing happy birthday twice so she knows if she has washed her hands long enough or brushed her teeth for the correct time.
Use paper towels in the bathrooms and kitchens instead of cloth hand towels. Cloth hand towels hold germs until washed and can spread to family member to family member.
To help spread the word about Healthing, LYSOL and television personality Giuliana Rancic have partnered together to visit YMCAs in select markets across the country to demonstrate Healthing in action. At each YMCA location, LYSOL will provide attendees with hands-on education about the products and steps required to practice improved hygiene habits in their own home, while making the idea fun and relatable to kids. LYSOL will also provide educational information and disinfecting products to the local YMCAs, along with the donation of a one-year membership to a deserving family. So keep an eye out at your local YMCA!
