Mirror Image Excerpt:
Trying to ignore the soft gasp of whimpered breaths from my mother, I attempt to rein in what I’m feeling. I would rather be numb. Numb to the fact that I might have a killer sister, psycho ex-boyfriend and a guy I want to fall in bed with but would won’t, since he will only break my heart. So yes, being numb would be a hell of a lot better.
I pretty much had enough of the crying and pleading. “So, there is a good possibility that I do have a twin.” Resolution fills me. I’m damn sure what I’m going to do next. “Thanks for telling me the truth, Mamma. I got to go.”
“Come home, Jess. Gerry is no longer here. He’s in jail and…I’m lonely. Please come home to me,” she says with hiccups.
“I-I can’t. It’s too late, but I’ll always love you. I’m a phone call away if you need me.” I hang up, as tears tumble from my eyes. I let them flow, hard and heavy.
A good five minutes pass before my calm settles. I get back on the road and head home.
Relief centers me when I see my rented townhouse. I pull up onto the driveway and park. I quickly get out of the truck and head to the front door. Naturally, knowing Joe is out of jail, my apprehension is high. I don’t want that bastard sneaking up on me.
Letting my guard down for one second to stick the key inside the lock, I feel something hits the back of my neck. A surge of electricity zaps my spine and runs through my body, the voltage making me convulse uncontrollably. Every nerve ending is lighting up with pain before I see black.
