Remember the olden days when a screech coming from the other room wouldn’t be cause for alarm? Or when you had to create a schedule to lay out who got to use the computer/phone at what time and for how long? Well I do. Looking back it was annoying but it was all that we knew.
Fast forward 20 years and I now can hold a tablet in my lap that has quadruple the memory of the computer I used in 1995. Even my phone does circles around that poor, beloved computer. In a world where speed is now expected, the computer that would take as long to boot up as it took me to make a pot of coffee is long gone.
As our technology has sped along at breakneck speed, so has our delivery systems. Until we had our system updated to the new X1 system I had no clue how far behind our original Comcast dvr box and modem was in updates and technology. If I give you any piece of advice it’s get your cables updated and your equipment updated. It has made the WORLD of difference and we have barely had any outages. While you may not need these Internet speeds right now, the point of the new 2 Gbps speed is to build up infrastructure for the future, where these fiber-run networks will be the norm. And they will be the norm.
Years ago I never could’ve imagined that my favorite gadget would be one so “futuristic”. If you would’ve told me that I would prefer reading on a digital screen, I would’ve had you committed. Not THIS diehard bookie. Well, as you grow older and have kids you begin to realize that space is a commodity. You also realize that time is too. Slowly perusing the bookstore at 10 pm at night, latte in hand is no longer a weekly thing. Where you used to have a bookshelf? Yeah, there’s a toy box there. First I got myself a Nook. That solved the book hoarding problem. Then I discovered my iPad.
Talk about finally dragging myself into the 21st century. When I won an iPad through a contest I wasn’t even sure how useful it would be. I am now on my second version, an iPad Air. I wish I would’ve had this when my older two kids were little. I seriously had no idea what I was missing. All of my books, apps, games (I need games to keep my brain from shrinking), email and documents are in one place. Not to mention my calendar, texting and magazines. How many pieces of paper I would’ve saved back then and have saved since I have had my iPad.
There are still times where I just need to read the actual book. Honestly though? I have seen the speed and convenience and it’s hard to turn my back on that.
In today’s tech-driven world, it’s all about being fast – faster than the competitors, fast enough to get it all done, fast enough to leave you some free time. Comcast recently announced it will begin offering Gigabit Pro, a new residential Internet service that offers speeds at 2-Gigabits-per-second. In tech speak, it sounds cool…but what does this mean for residents?
The new speeds are at least double what any other provider can provide. They’re the fastest speeds to the most homes. You’ll be able to download multimedia files in 60 seconds, HD movies in 20 seconds and full music albums in less than a second. With this change, XFINITY has increased their speeds 15 times in the past 13 years – a showing of dedication to the future of technology. Since I have been using the new service I can totally tell just how fast it is. We have all been steaming and using all of our devices and there has been absolutely no hitches in the service or slowdowns in our streaming. It’s amazing.
The speedy service will launch in Atlanta, California, Chattanooga, Chicago, Colorado, Houston, Knoxville, Miami, Nashville, NW Indiana, Portland, Twin Cities, Utah and Washington state. It’ll be available to about 18 million homes by the end of the year – more homes in more neighborhoods than any other network! For more info, visit the site here: http://comca.st/1KnnkiI.
