Review- Emily Owens M.D {pilot episode}

After the Swan Song of so many of my favorite shows in the spring I was really hoping I could find a new favorite to take their place. When I was given the chance to preview the new show Emily Owen M.D I jumped at the chance because I love Mamie Gummer and really liked her in the other medical show she was in 2 seasons ago. She’s a great, expressive actor just like her mom (Meryl Streep).

Here’s a quick synopsis of the show from it’s writer Jennie Snyder Urman :

Emily Owens MD stars the amazingly talented Mamie Gummer. Mamie stars as Dr. Emily Owens, a first year intern who realizes that the hospital she’s working at feels strangely like… high school. The jocks are in orthopedics, the popular girls are in plastic surgery, the geeks in neurology… you get the point. It’s a medical drama, but it’s also a coming of age story in a lot of ways. Emily is on the verge of becoming the kind of person she’s always wanted to be. Only problem? Those anxieties and insecurities that she had in high school – the ones she thought she’d outgrow – they’re still there…

I can totally relate. I have had quite a few workplaces like that! I was a huge fan of Scrubs when it was on and Emily Owens M.D reminded me a lot of Scrubs. I really was entertained watching this show. It has witty internal dialogues, awesome chemistry between the actors and it’s faced paced, which are all markers of a show I will like. I have a feeling if people give it a chance they will love it. It’s charming, the first episode gives you insight on Emily’s awkward youth (which makes her relatable-she’s now working with her childhood tormentor…), shows the character’s imperfections in a tv-land filled with perfect people but also Emily demonstrates that she does have the tools to overcome some of her insecurities if she gives herself a chance. I am really curious on how the nerdy, but cute resident Micah Barnes (who guided her through a delicate surgery that was close to home for him) will help or hinder her personal growth and confidence. (On a personal note- the banter between Emily and the school yard girl with the “orange back pack” was my favorite part of the show ;))
