I have owned cats (or should I say they have owned me) for over 20 years. Just in the last 5 years the products that are available to pet owners have grown in leaps and bounds. I remember walking into a pet store and noticing just how many aisles there were for dogs compared to cats. The litter choices were limited to 4 brands and so was the cat food. To think of what I fed my poor cats 20 years ago makes me shudder.
Last February we adopted 2 rescue cats. They were found in horrible conditions and when I saw their pictures on the rescues Facebook page I knew they needed to come live with us. They both have eye conditions that developed from having FIV (cat version of a RSV) at very young ages. It also seems that my female cat Aura developed allergies to a lot of things, mainly dust. All kinds of dust. We figured this out after a few gross weeks. (I’ll spare you the details) She was miserable. As soon as we switched to dust free, fragrance free litter she stopped sneezing and her eyes cleared up. We keep trying different types to see what she can handle. Some types of litter claim they are dust free but she immediately would have reactions.
I was super excited when I heard the company Weruva® was developing a cat litter that not only was dust free but responsibly sourced and sustainable. I try to use these type of products as much as I can in our house. According to Weruva bacteria is often the culprit when it comes to litter box odors. Hinoki Wood and Green Tea team up to suppress bacteria and odor naturally. The litter actually smells good! It doesn’t have that perfume-y smell to it. It’s a natural green tea aroma. Smells just like the cup of tea I enjoy in the morning. I noticed a distinct reduction of odor when the cats are using it. This is fantastic since we have two cats and sometimes I swear that’s all they do is use the litter box all day!
Here are some facts about the litter and Weruva®:
- Clay and Grain Free yet still clump-‐able! No Corn or Wheat…Both common culprits of Cat Allergens.
- We love mother earth just as we love our pets, so sustainability & stewardship of our resources are paramount. To ensure the responsible use of Hinoki, the wood we use is a salvaged by-‐product of other industries such as the piano & construction industries. A new tree is also planted for every tree used!
- When Weruva decided to make cat food, it was so we could create the highest standard possible for our three rescued kitties – Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa – the namesakes for the WeRuVa family of brands. Fueled by the same passion, we sought to create the best cat litter for our cats – Hinoki Wood (in the Japanese Cypress family) and Green Tea based.
- The characteristics of Hinoki Wood naturally curb humidity and Green Tea contains catechins . These both work together to suppress the growth of mold and bacteria which in turn aids in odor control.
The unveiling………
It was a success. She didn’t sneeze, her eyes didn’t water any more than they already were and there was no coughing at all. My other cat Frosty wouldn’t let me take a picture, he’s very private about his potty habits, but after initially being afraid of the litter, he was totally fine after he saw Aura use it. Side note: he’s afraid of pretty much everything but toilet paper and balloons.

The company also threw in a bonus in the form of a few packages of their wet cat food. My cats dig it, especially the Pumpkin Patch Up. Frosty ate it even though he notoriously turns his nose up at most wet food. I am definitely going to be ordering more of it.
